Rationality often leads to atheism?
In my opinion, yes. I mean if you think about it, religion rituals makes no sense, nor does worshiping a god(s) with with faith as the only choice."That what can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence". That my rational mind keeps coming up with when it comes to disproving God. What do you think? Can rationality leads to atheism?

There are a lot of assumptions in this statement.

Firstly the only basis for rationality you give is that you are rational.

You equate "rationality" with "being atheistic", ergo, "irrationality" equals "belief in a God", when there are many irrational atheists and many rational Believers in the world

You quote Christopher Hitchens (who is an atheist, so it is hardly an unbiased statement) but in fact it applies the other way as well - there is no evidence that there is no god, so atheism can be dismissed on the same basis.

In any case the statement is not true. Lack of evidence is not proof or disproof in itself, it is merely a lack of evidence. Until 1929 there was no evidence that the universe was expanding, Edwin Hubble’s observations didn’t suddenly make it any truer than it had always been.

I consider myself as rational as you consider yourself and yet we have diametrically opposed opinions where it comes to the origins of life and the universe. I consider it preposterous that the observed order and complexity of everything could have come about by blind chance, you find my apparently simplistic explanation that "somebody made it" equally preposterous. One of us is wrong, it doesn’t necessarily make either of us irrational.

The majority of confirmed atheists I have spoken to are ignorant of all but the most basic processes of the theory of evolution, I have only ever met two who have read Darwin, Gould or even Dawkins’ work, which makes me postulate that atheists as as guilty of blind faith as anyone who believes in God. Most I have spoken to are not atheistic through any strong conviction or study but rather because they find the concept of a superior being uncomfortable to them and because evolution is presented as a proven fact rather than a theoretical explanation.

you got that right

It did for me.

Well Bravo. Thanks for your speech on why you became an atheist.

For some yes, but then again you need to define rationalism - what does that mean to you? And just because there’s no evidence to prove he exists, there is also no evidence to prove that he doesn’t. Haha…what a conundrum.

Absolutely!

You’ve asked this question before mate but I’ll answer it again. Yes, yes it does. And you’re on the right track for believing so. Anyone with the slightest bit of common sense and logical thinking will notice how contradictory the bible is, put it down and stop reading it.

Rational thought is what separates an Athiest from a Theist.

lol. nope. "Pride" and "Rebellion" lead to the LIE!!
Karl P | Nov 19, 2009

well, it only seems right to Atheist. To everyone else their religion seems right to them.

Yes, absolutely.

"In philosophy, rationality and reason are the key methods used to analyze the data gathered through systematically gathered observations. In economics, sociology, and political science, a decision or situation is often called rational if it is in some sense optimal, and individuals or organizations are often called rational if they tend to act somehow optimally in pursuit of their goals. Thus one speaks, for example, of a rational allocation of resources, or of a rational corporate strategy. In this concept of "rationality", the individuals goals or motives are taken for granted and not made subject to criticism, ethical or otherwise. Thus, rationality simply refers to the success of goal attainment, whatever those goals may be. Sometimes, in this context, rationality is equated with behavior that is self-interested to the point of being selfish. Sometimes rationality implies having complete knowledge about all the details of a given situation."

I think what you are asking is about is believability. You want evidence to believe that religions aren’t a sham.

Atheists are purveyors of a wicked plot

"Six things there are, which the Lord hateth, and the seventh His soul detesteth: haughty eyes, A LYING TONGUE, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that deviseth wicked plots, feet that are swift to run into mischief, A DECEITFUL WITNESS THAT UTTERETH LIES, AND HIM THAT SOWETH DISCORD AMONG BRETHREN."
Prov 6:16-19

Human rationality is to narrow to fit The Almighty into a neat little manageable package. You are blinded by a feeling of superiority and personal importance. Humility and open eyes will show you the miracles happening every day around you and in you.

When you are ready to get down of your self important high horse, The Creator will be waiting for you. Be careful getting down.
Hudie | Nov 19, 2009

I tend to think more that rationality would lead to being agnostic rather than atheist.
Gem | Nov 19, 2009

yes, and sadly the only way the world will ever be filled with rational intelligent people is if we outbreed the religious ret*rds. it time to get to f*ckin’!!
dontbejealous | Nov 19, 2009

man’s rationality leads to rejection of god

true rationality that comes from God knows God exist by the evidence he shows us.
Psalms 14:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that does good.

God calls a person a fool because the evidence shows god but they refuse to believe it and deny it.

man’s rationality is to reject every thing that is evidence for god because they do not believe in god nor can they. they will always try to find a natural explanation for every thing since they reject the fact that god could exist.

their blinders are fashioned such that even when evidence really shows god its rejected since in their thinking there can never be a god..
God's servant | Nov 19, 2009

yes, but it can also lead to a slew of other beliefs as well. perhaps you become agnostic or Buddhist. and the rational card that theists will always have, where did we come from? yes evolution made us what we are today, but until scientists can immitate the enviornment where the first cellular life was formed, without any intervention, theists will have at least some degree of secure ground. rationality is what started religion and can also stop it, but as of now since there is too little known to completly disprove other rationalities, rationality will lead to many beliefs and there for many conflicts in deciding what rationality is the correct rationality.
Reather | Nov 19, 2009

No because if you were really rational you would be catholic. Catholic church teaches that evolution is correct and Catholics believe in the big bang.

Rational- God caused atoms to come together and the big bang to happen. Then all life came from just the hydrogen atom. This must have been done through intelligent desighn.

also for you agnostics what kind of God would create all the beautiful things of this earth and give an animal(human) the power to reason and then just be so stupid that he is not invovled with his own creation or have a plan for it. That is irrational

Irrational- Atoms just randomly come together and form all of life. Animal starts swimming around and randomly through RARE genetic mutations forms flippers. Life exists for humans but life cant exist for a pre existing being or in other words God,

what makes more sense to you. The only reason people become atheist and claim that it is rational is because they want an excuse to do what ever they want.

There’s nothing rational about saying nothing created everything. It’s an insult to my intelligence and a lie. There is tons of proof that God exists and that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh.

1. Prophecies about the Messiah written hundreds of years before Jesus walked on the Earth.
2. Secular history that records Jesus lived about 2000 years ago and was crucified during the reign of the emperor Tiberius and that He was worshipped as God. There is tons of evidence concerning Jesus Christ outside the Bible, even written by those who massacred the first Christians.
3. Jesus bodily ressurection, who the Apostles had seen with their own eyes and were willing rather to be martyred then to deny. People don’t sacrifice themselves for something they believe is a lie, and the Apostles knew that Jesus had bodily risen because they had seen it themselves.
4. Just look in the mirror. Are you created in the image of God or are you an "evolved monkey" like some people foolishly believe.
5. God believes you have all the proof you need.

"For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse." - Romans 1:20

If you go to Hell because of your unbelief (and you will if you don’t repent) you will have noone to blame but yourself. I don’t deserve to go to Heaven because I’m a horribly wicked sinner against God, and if I don’t deserve it, then you don’t either. Salvation is a free gift of God, and He is no respecter of persons. You will be judged like everyone else, and your only hope is faith in the Son of God (God in the flesh), because only He has taken the death you deserve for your sins.

"Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." - Galatians 6:7
Christian Truth | Nov 19, 2009

Rationalization can just as well lead to Christianity as Atheism. In fact, all decisions are realized through rationalization. Your question is a good example of thought processing through rationalization but it offers nothing new for the consideration of other thinking individuals.

For example, I see your question as nothing more than a feeble attempt to insinuate your lack of religion on my having one. As I would not dream of insinuating my religion which is between my God and me only on you; so I will not accept your attempt to proselytize your Atheism on me.

Keep your religion, or the lack of it, to yourself and I will do the same.

Never met a rational person yet atheist or any follower of any religion. All people are neurotic on some level.
