How does the aberration of light occur?
I was looking into the aberration of light, and learned that it had to do with the fact that light travels at a finite speed and in the time it takes light from a distant star to reach Earth, the Earth has moved a little bit; thus making the star appear to be in a different place in the sky. What I don’t understand is how this can be. Isn’t aberration of light just a case of seeing something from a different perspective? If I look at a tree in the distance, and then move a little bit to the left, the tree will seem to be in a different place with respect to the horizon behind it. But I wouldn’t say that this us due to me moving in the time light from the tree took to reach me, I would simply say that this is due to me seeing the tree from a different perspective.
Also, I was reading about Relativistic Doppler Effect here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relativisti c_Doppler_effect and there is one thing I do not get. I do not understand why light from a moving source is tilted towards the direction of the source’s motion (relative to the observer). As I understand it, for a moving observer, light is reduced in wavelength but concentrated behind the observer, while for a moving source, light is reduced in wavelength but spread out behind? So why is the aberration of light such that it is concentrated behind a moving observer, but concentrated in front of a moving source?

Your thought experiment falls apart because you cannot view your tree while traveling sideways to the line of sight to it at 66,000 mph. Or can you?
As far as the Wiki article, it says (and beyond my understanding) that you must consider time dilation and aberration of light as well as the Doppler effect all together.

There are two different phenomena occurring here. One is parallax, which is when you move to the left, the tree appears to move to the right, dependent of its distance (if it’s very far away, it doesn’t appear to move, if it’s close, it appears to move away from you quickly). But light aberration is different. When you move to the left, the object appears to move to the left as well, independent of its distance.
The rain analogy works well here. If you are standing under a rain cloud, the cloud is actually straight above you and you can follow the raindrops to find that their path lines up directly with the cloud. But now start running to the left, and you will find that the raindrops fall towards you from the left, even though the cloud is slowly moving away towards your right. You would conclude by reality and parallax that the cloud is moving to the right relative to you, but if you traced the direction of the raindrops back, you might conclude that the source would be coming from the left. Notice that the falling angle of the raindrops are only dependent on your speed and not on the distance to the cloud. What this says is that the aberration effect occurs in the opposite direction as the parallax effect and is distance independent. It’s just that it’s much easier for us to observe parallax, so that’s what we’re used to. To easily observe aberration of light (as opposed to raindrops), you have to move close to the speed of light, which is something we don’t do too often.
The aberration effect does explain why the grid in figure 2 of the wiki page on relativistic doppler effect appears to be slanted forward in the direction of the moving observer. It’s a bit counterintuitive, but if you try to follow it through with the idea of raindrops, then you can make sense of it.
What I also do not understand is why their grid gets wider in front of the moving observer. I cannot reconcile that claim with either the raindrop analogy, nor with the relativistic length contraction rules, which states that lengths contract in the direction of travel relative to the observer. I’ll have to think about that one a little longer, but I may be too old. Sounds like that one is confusing you as well, so maybe someone else can shed some doppler-shifted light on that for both of us!

In your tree example, you’re talking about the effect called parallax. Yes, there is parallax when looking at stars. That is one method of measuring the distance to stars.
Stellar aberration occurs on top of this.

There are some good answers here, but I already wrote the following and perhaps it helps.

To grasp aberration, let’s talk only about the exact same perspective. That is, imagine the star is directly in front of you. If you and the star are stationary, you see the star directly in front of you. Now imagine that the star is still directly in front of you (even if it won’t be for long), but you are moving to the left at some sizable velocity. Even at that initial instant when the star IS directly in front of you, the star does not appear to be in front of you. It appears to be to your left. The reason is because, by virtue of your own velocity, you are impinging upon the light coming from the star to your left, which as far as you can relate, is where it’s coming from.
In other words, you are adding a lateral component to the light you are observing, which, if you were not moving relative to the star, would not exist. Since our perception of where the light is coming from is dependent on its direction of travel, this results in a translation of the star’s apparent position.
What the first answerer above me is trying to point out is that you can’t conveniently experiment with aberration of light because the velocities required to observe the effects are very large.
I don’t understand what you are asking in the second paragraph. If something is emitting waves, and you travel toward it, the frequency of encountering the waves increases. If you move away, it decreases. Similarly if you view yourself as stationary, and the source as moving toward you, the apparent frequency increases, if it moves away, decreases. All of these designations are relative, so moving towards one location may be moving away from another, and moving together, no shift exists regardless of velcoity (for light in a vacuum, anyway).

In Saving Private Ryan when Tom Hanks is in the bridge and something blows up and he sees everything in slow motion. Well I though it was a movie making process when making war movies but it is true. My convoy got hit many times by IEDs and everything is a rush until it hits you…and you see your buddy without an arm, bleeding and slow motion kicks in. You get like stupid for a moment or two but it seems like forever. And if you dont snap out of it your buddy might die. It is just like in the movies although it sucks even more in real life. You do have that one hero in the group that gets control of the situation but you got those who cry while in the middle of the battle. It sucks, it really does.

The only sucessesful and in the market is samsung Model C 5212 duel sim with camera,Fm and recording,blue tooth,music and nice looking and in the range Rs 5300-5600.Ofcourse there cheaper versions from china.In Samsung model,both the sims will be active all time and while speaking on one line,you can receive the other incoming call.The first call gets on hold.You can try this as this is with in your budget.I am using this model for past two months.
